Building your first proper hi-fi system is one of the most rewarding things you can do as a music lover — and one of the easiest to overthink. After nearly two decades helping people across Shropshire put systems together, I can tell you the happiest customers aren’t the ones who spent the most. They’re the ones who bought well, in the right order, and ended up with a system that suits their music and their room. Here’s how to do exactly that.

Start with the speakers

If there’s one place to focus your attention, it’s the loudspeakers. More than any other component, they shape the character of your sound — and they’re the part you’ll notice every single time you listen. A good pair of speakers in a modest system will always beat expensive electronics driving a poor pair.

The trick is matching the speaker to your room. A big floorstander in a small living room can overwhelm the space; a compact standmount, properly positioned, will often sound far better. This is exactly why we’d rather you come and listen than buy blind — brands like Monitor Audio and JBL each have their own voice, and the “right” one is simply the one you enjoy most.

Choose an amplifier to match

Your amplifier is the engine room. It needs enough power to drive your chosen speakers comfortably, but “more watts” isn’t the goal — quality and synergy are. A well-matched amplifier lets your speakers do their best work, with none of the harshness or fatigue that makes you want to turn the music off.

For most first systems, a good integrated amplifier is the sensible choice: it combines everything you need in one box, keeps things simple, and leaves room in the budget for those all-important speakers. Ranges from Arcam, Roksan and Musical Fidelity are all superb starting points.

Pick your source: vinyl, streaming, or both

Now for the fun part — where your music actually comes from. There’s no wrong answer here, only what suits how you like to listen.

If you love the ritual of records, a turntable is a joy. A Pro-Ject or Technics deck with a good Ortofon cartridge will breathe life into your record collection — just remember it needs setting up properly to sound its best (something we’re always happy to do for you).

If convenience matters more, modern streaming sounds superb and puts millions of tracks at your fingertips. A WiiM streamer is remarkable value and the simplest way to bring your system online. And of course, there’s no reason you can’t have both.

Don’t forget the bits in between

Cables and supports aren’t glamorous, but they matter more than people expect. Decent AudioQuest cabling lets your system give you everything it’s got, and a stable Blok rack keeps vibration away from your electronics. You don’t need to spend a fortune — just avoid letting a weak link hold back everything else.

How much should you spend?

A common and sensible starting point is to split your budget roughly evenly between speakers, amplifier and source — then adjust to taste. But honestly, the best advice I can give is to ignore the maths for a moment and come and listen. Bring a few albums you know inside out, settle in with a coffee, and let your ears do the deciding. Numbers on a spec sheet tell you almost nothing about how a system will make you feel.

Come and hear it for yourself

There’s no substitute for hearing a system in person, and that’s what our Shrewsbury showroom is for. Whether you’ve a clear idea or haven’t a clue where to start, we’ll take the time to understand what you love about music and help you build a first system you’ll enjoy for years — with no pressure, ever.

Book a relaxed demo or get in touch — I’d love to help you get started.
