HiFi Rose Streamers Compared: RS151 vs RS451 vs RS250A

Every so often a brand turns up that makes people stop mid-showroom and ask “what on earth is that?”. HiFi Rose is that brand at the moment — a Korean maker whose streamers are as much a pleasure to look at as to listen to, thanks to enormous touchscreens that show your album art the way it deserves. We’ve just put the flagship RS151 on our demonstration floor, so this seems the right moment to untangle the range: RS151, RS451 and RS250A — what’s shared, what isn’t, and which one belongs in your system.

What every Rose shares

All three run Rose OS, the company’s own operating system, behind a proper glass touchscreen — so the streamer itself is the interface, not just a black box you poke at from a phone (though the Rose Connect app is there when the sofa wins). All three are Roon Ready, handle Spotify Connect, Tidal, Qobuz, Apple Music and AirPlay, and all three decode PCM to 32-bit/768kHz and DSD up to DSD512 — far beyond anything you’ll actually stream. Build is solid aluminium throughout. The differences are about scale, outputs and who each one is really for.

HiFi Rose RS250A — the compact one

The RS250A is the neat one: 278mm wide and just over 3kg, with an 8.8-inch touchscreen and a single ES9028 PRO DAC chip. Its volume-controlled RCA output means it can feed a power amplifier or a pair of active loudspeakers directly — a genuinely tidy two-box (or one-box-and-speakers) system. There’s a 3.5mm headphone jack for late-night listening, an HDMI output for showing music videos or your library on a telly, and full MQA decoding. If space is tight or it’s destined for a study or second room, this is the one to hear first.

HiFi Rose RS451 — the slim one with the headphone habit

The RS451 is the newest of the three and slots neatly in the middle. Full 430mm width but a slim 92mm tall, with the same 8.8-inch screen — and a very serious headphone stage: four individually driven amplifier channels behind 4.4mm balanced, 6.35mm and XLR outputs on the front. Inside there are two ES9027 PRO DAC chips, one dedicated to the line outputs and one to the headphone stage, so neither compromises the other. Line outs (RCA and XLR) are fixed-level, so it wants a proper amplifier downstream — and it measures vanishingly low distortion on the way. If headphones are half your listening, the RS451 is the sweet spot of the range.

HiFi Rose RS151 — the flagship

The RS151 is the statement piece: a full-size, 11kg source built around a 15.4-inch full-HD touchscreen that turns the front of your rack into a living album sleeve. It uses the newer ES9039 PRO DAC with Rose’s isolated Digital Processing Core and femto-precision clocking, and its connectivity reads like a studio patchbay: RCA and XLR analogue outs (fixed or variable), coaxial, optical, AES/EBU and I2S digital outs, HDMI out, HDMI eARC in from a telly, plus an analogue input so it can sit at the very centre of a system. No headphone socket here — this one assumes the loudspeakers are the point. It’s the best-sounding streamer Rose has made, and the difference is not subtle played through serious amplification.

So which one?

Choose the RS250A if space matters or you want the shortest path to a great streaming system — its variable output straight into a power amp or active speakers is wonderfully uncomplicated.

Choose the RS451 if headphones are a big part of your life. That four-amp headphone stage with a dedicated DAC is the story here, and the slim case slides into a rack without drama.

Choose the RS151 if the streamer is to be the heart of a serious loudspeaker system — the big screen is the bit everyone remembers, but the engineering underneath is the bit you keep hearing.
