Three British amplifier houses sit side by side in our listening room — Arcam, Roksan and Musical Fidelity — and between them they cover almost every idea of what an amplifier should be. All three have been at it for four decades or more. Here is who they are, how they differ, and how to choose between them with your ears rather than your search engine.

Arcam — the Cambridge engineers

Arcam began in 1976 as A&R Cambridge, founded by engineering students whose idea of hi-fi was music without editorial: clean, warm, effortless amplification that gets out of the way. Founded in London in 1985, Roksan announced itself with the Xerxes turntable — a radical rethink of how a record player should be built — and its amplifiers have carried that same swagger ever since. Musical Fidelity — the powerhouse

Founded in London in 1982 by clarinettist Antony Michaelson, Musical Fidelity has always believed generosity of power is a virtue: big supplies, big current, and music reproduced with ease at any scale. The flagship in the room: Nu-Vista 800.2

And then there is the Nu-Vista 800.2 — the most ambitious amplifier we keep on demonstration. The Nu-Vista line takes its name from the nuvistor: a miniature, ultra-reliable valve developed in the 1960s, which Musical Fidelity uses in the input stage and marries to an immense solid-state output.
