Monitor Audio have replaced our best-selling loudspeaker range. The Silver Series — the sweet spot of their catalogue for as long as we’ve stocked it — has moved from its seventh generation to the all-new Silver 8G: seven models, rebuilt from the drivers out. We’ve lived with 7G on our demonstration floor for years, and the first 8G models are on their way to us now, so here’s an honest look at what’s actually changed — and what it means if you own or fancy a pair.
The same idea, rebuilt
The positioning hasn’t moved: Silver remains the range where Monitor Audio’s serious engineering becomes genuinely affordable. What’s changed is under the skin — Monitor Audio call 8G their most capable Silver Series ever, and for once the changes are specific enough to take seriously.
A reworked tweeter
The C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter has been comprehensively re-engineered: a vented design with revised internal geometry to reduce distortion, an updated compression ring, and a new ring neodymium magnet for greater efficiency — all firing through the latest UD Waveguide II. In listening terms, that promises a cleaner, more consistent top end whether you’re listening quietly at night or properly opened up.
RST II becomes RST III
The dimpled cone faces that define the Silver look move to a third generation. The cone geometry is more rigid to cut colouration, and behind it sits a re-engineered motor system, a new progressive spider, an upgraded voice coil and better venting. Monitor Audio’s stated aim is transparency and control through the vocal range — exactly where you’d want the money spent.
The owl port
Our favourite detail: the new Silent Flow Port widens the port and shapes its flare on the interlocking wing feathers of an owl — the bird evolution engineered for silent flight. The result is smoother airflow and less of the “chuffing” that can blur bass at volume: cleaner, deeper low end from the same cabinets.
The quiet upgrades
Crossovers get higher-quality components for tighter driver integration. The walnut finish is now a fully engineered European veneer — real layered timber achieving exotic-wood looks sustainably. And one structural surprise: the new Silver 100 8G is a true three-way standmount — a rarity at this level of the market.
Should 7G owners upgrade?
Honestly? Not urgently. The 7G range remains a superb loudspeaker family — it’s what we’ve been demonstrating with pride, and nothing about a new generation changes what yours does in your room tonight. 8G is refinement across the board rather than reinvention. If you’re happy, stay happy; if you’re curious, an audition of the two side by side is the only comparison that counts.
Buying today: 7G or 8G?
If you’re starting fresh, hear 8G first — it’s the current range and the one we’ll be demonstrating going forward. That said, our Silver 200 7G floorstanders are still in the showroom and remain a proven, lovely-sounding pair — worth asking about while they’re with us.
