If we had a pound for every time someone asked “so what do I actually get by stepping up from Silver to Gold?”, we could stock another range. It is the most natural question in the shop — Monitor Audio’s Silver and Gold series sit next to each other on the ladder, share an obvious family resemblance, and both earn their place. Here is the honest picture.

What they share

Everything Monitor Audio makes has a recognisable character: detailed, even-handed and natural, with metal-coned drivers that stay composed when the music gets busy. Neither range flatters recordings or hides in the shadows — which is exactly why they partner so well with honest amplification like Arcam.

The case for Silver

The Silver 7G range is one of the great value propositions in hi-fi: serious cabinet work, serious drivers, sensible prices. The Silver 100 standmount fills small-to-medium rooms with remarkable scale, and the Silver 500 floorstander steps that up for larger spaces. For many systems, Silver is not the compromise — it is the destination.

What Gold adds

The Gold 100 brings a more sophisticated tweeter, richer cabinet construction and a sweeter, more refined balance — the sound relaxes and opens out, especially at low volumes and with well-recorded acoustic music. It also deserves better partnering electronics: Gold asks more of the system around it, and rewards it.

Which should you choose?

Room, electronics and ears — in that order. In a modest room with mid-level electronics, Silver may genuinely be the better-balanced system, and we will say so. If the room and the rest of the chain can support it, Gold is a lasting step up rather than a sideways one.

Hear the difference in twenty minutes

This comparison is precisely what our listening room is for: both ranges are set up, so we can switch between Silver and Gold with the same amplifier and the same music while you listen. See what’s on demonstration, then arrange a demonstration — bring the albums you know best.
