Every week someone tells us, almost apologetically, that they still have a few hundred CDs in the loft. There’s nothing to apologise for. The compact disc is quietly one of the best-value routes to serious sound quality there is — and through a good modern player, a collection you already own can sound better than it ever did in the nineties.
Why CD deserves another listen
Three things changed while nobody was looking. First, digital-to-analogue conversion — the electronics that turn the disc’s data into music — has improved out of all recognition, so a current player extracts far more from the same silver disc than the machine you owned twenty years ago. Second, used CDs have become remarkably inexpensive: whole discographies can be had for the price of a single new LP. And third, a CD is yours — no subscription, no licensing changes, no album quietly vanishing from a streaming catalogue overnight.
What actually matters in a CD player
Two jobs happen inside every player: reading the disc accurately (the transport) and converting the data to music (the DAC). Build quality matters for the first — a solid, well-damped mechanism reads discs reliably for decades. The DAC dominates the sound; it’s why players at different levels genuinely sound different, and why a demonstration tells you more than any specification sheet.
Worth checking, too: digital outputs, which let a player double as a transport into a newer DAC or streamer later; a display you can read from the sofa; and — if you fancy the best of both worlds — network models such as SACD/streaming players that treat discs and streaming as equals.
An honest word
If you own a handful of CDs and do all your listening through streaming services, a dedicated player probably isn’t your best next purchase — a good streamer will serve you better, and we’ll happily say so. But if shelves of discs are sitting unplayed, reviving them is one of the most satisfying upgrades in hi-fi, and often the gentlest route to genuinely high-end sound.
